Who defines our goals ?

24 Dec : I got call from my dad at 6 AM . On same day , I got a call from my college at 1 AM night . Topic was same :) but context was different .

Who defines our goal ? Is it society or self ?

Looking from the start .. In childhood , Parents defines us what is good or bad . They set up different goals for us . In school , Our goals are getting marks in unit tests or performing in some school activity . All driven by teachers or colleagues . In 12 th , getting into good college becomes the goal .. When we land up in some college then either getting into higher eduction or good job becomes goal .. After getting into job or completing higher education .. Life seems to have no goal for a while .. At that time , most of us decide to settle down :-) . And after getting married , there comes lot of life long goals which never finish .

Are not all these goals are society driven ?.. if they are not then how could maximum of people choose the same trend .. How can there be so commonality in this trend when there are so many different personality .. Sounds interesting ??

Only few people choose to take path less travelled . What makes them to do so ?

Cant think of an answer to teh question "are not all these goals society driven"
Regarding what makes the people take the road less tried
1. A inner calling compulsion is reason strong enough. Some call it hunch, some call it passion and some don't call it anything at all, but in one way there desire too is to be recognized, albeit for doing differently ..otherwise u know what happens to them
2. There is a song by iron maiden that talks about this..
"Is it right to believe
In the need to be free
It's a time when you die
And without asking why..
...
Not alone with a dream
Just a want to be free
With a need to belong
I am a clansman
Freedom
.....It's a time wrought with fear
It's a land wrought with change

Nice point Ranjan !! Another thing which I found that these people have vision and are mature enough to find the things which give them real joy . These people are ready to sacrifice other priorities for the work they really like....... Hold on .... Did i say "sacrifice" ?? No .. I think it is greatest favor to self .. Rather that condemning whole life to torture for stuffs which don't ignite any passion .. They are picking stuff which give them meaning.

Ohhlala .. I liked Iron Maiden's song .. Seriously ,, At the end , every one is looking for freedom .. We all are slave of something and want to get out of these shackles .

I agree with you in a way that our life is society driven but its an individuals life after all and every individual has to live life of his own ... It is always the individuals who define goals for themselves but their goals are always influenced by the society they live in ... some time more and some times less ... Multinational chains like McD sell veg burgers in India though they never sell it in US ... coz their goals in India are driven by the society here ... It is true for individuals also ... If my goal is to write a world class blog then I will most probably write in English and not in Hindi as I want it to make it popular worldwide ... so as far as I think goals should also be driven by the civilization or the society we are part of ... else there is no meaning of the goal ....
